Historical context

Maximinus Daia, born Galerius Valerius Maximinus, was appointed caesar in the Tetrarchy in 305 by his uncle Galerius. This controversial appointment contributed to the civil wars of the Tetrarchy that began the following year. Maximinus later claimed the rank of augustus in 310, contested power with Licinius, and ruled until his defeat and death in 313.

Struck at the Antioch mint in Syria, this bronze AE2 coin carries the obverse legend "GAL VAL MAXIMINVS NOB CAES", naming him as noble caesar alongside his laureate head. The reverse features Virtus advancing right, draped and cuirassed, carrying a transverse spear, shield, and trophy, accompanied by the inscription "VIRTVS EX-ERCITVS".
