Historical context

Galerius Valerius Maximinus, born as Daza, was admitted to the Tetrarchy as caesar in 305 by his uncle Galerius. He claimed the title of augustus in 310, serving as Roman emperor until 313 while sharing and contesting power with Licinius. This coin was produced at Antioch in northern Syria, an ancient regional centre on the Orontes River that had become the capital of Roman Syria following Roman conquest in 63 BC.
