Historical context

Maximinus Daia, born Galerius Valerius Maximinus, was admitted to the Tetrarchy as caesar in 305 by his uncle Galerius. He claimed the rank of augustus in 310, sharing and contesting power within the Roman Empire alongside Licinius until their conflict culminated in the Battle of Tzirallum in 313. This bronze AE2 coinage was produced under his authority at the mint of Antioch in Syria during this period.

The coin bears the obverse inscription "IMP C GAL VAL MAXIMINVS P F AVG", identifying Maximinus as emperor. Its reverse depicts the figure of Virtus, represented nude and advancing while carrying a transverse spear, shield, and a trophy across the shoulder. This design is accompanied by the military reverse legend "VIRTVS EXERCITVS" or "VIRTVS EX-ERCITVS".
