Historical context

Maximinus Daia, born Galerius Valerius Maximinus, was Roman emperor from 310 to 313. Appointed caesar in 305 by his uncle Galerius, he later claimed the title of augustus in 310, sharing and contesting power with Licinius during the civil wars of the Tetrarchy. A committed pagan, he conducted persecutions of Christians until his defeat at the Battle of Tzirallum and subsequent death in 313.

This bronze AE2 coinage was produced at the Antioch mint in Syria during the Roman imperial period. The obverse presents Maximinus Daia with the imperial title in the inscription IMP C GAL VAL MAXIMINVS P F AVG. The reverse design features the genius holding a cornucopiae and the head of Sol, accompanied by the inscription GENIO AV-GVSTI.
