Historical context

He stabilised the empire, brought an end to the Crisis of the Third Century, and appointed fellow officer Maximian as Augustus and co-emperor in 286. Under Diocletian's governance, the Roman Empire was divided, with Maximian ruling the Western Empire and Diocletian ruling the Eastern Empire as senior Augustus.

Struck at the mint of Antioch in Syria under the authority of Diocletian, this gold coin represents the aureus denomination, which served as the primary gold coin of ancient Rome from the first century BC until the early fourth century AD. The piece features Maximian, bearing the obverse legend "MAXIMIANVS AVGVSTVS". The reverse displays Maximian togate, holding a globe and a short baton, accompanied by the legend "CONSVL VI - P P PROCOS".
