Historical context

Galerius Valerius Maximinus, born as Daza, was admitted to the Tetrarchy as caesar in 305 by his uncle Galerius. He claimed the title of augustus in 310, serving as Roman emperor until 313 while sharing and contesting power with Licinius. A committed pagan who led one of the final persecutions of Christians, he ruled until his defeat by Licinius at the Battle of Tzirallum and his death in 313.

This bronze AE2 coinage was produced under Maximinus Daia at the mint of Antioch in Syria. The obverse depicts the laureate head of the emperor accompanied by the legend "IMP C GAL VAL MAXIMINVS P F AVG", reflecting his claimed imperial title. The reverse displays Hercules standing right and leaning on a lion's skin set upon a club, paired with the legend "HERCVLI - VICTORI".
