Historical context

Diocletian was Roman emperor from 284 until his abdication in 305, having ended the Crisis of the Third Century and established the Tetrarchy, under which he governed the Eastern Empire as senior Augustus. Antioch in northern Syria was the capital of Roman Syria, located on the Orontes River, and stood as the third largest city in the Roman Empire after Rome and Alexandria. This coin was minted in Antioch under Diocletian's imperial authority.
