Historical context

In 305, Emperor Galerius was promoted to augustus upon the abdication of Diocletian and admitted his nephew Maximinus Daza to the Tetrarchy with the rank of caesar. The aureus served as the principal gold coin of the Roman Empire from the 1st century BC until its replacement by the solidus in the early 4th century. This issue was struck at Antioch, Syria, between AD 305 and AD 306 under Maximinus Daia in the name of Galerius.
