Historical context

Maximinus Daia, born Daza, entered the Roman Tetrarchy in 305 with the rank of caesar under his uncle Galerius. Maximinus, who later claimed the title of augustus in 310, administered eastern territories and struck coinage at Antioch before his defeat and death in 313.

This gold aureus was produced at the Antioch mint while Maximinus held the subordinate imperial rank of caesar, reflected in the obverse legend "MAXIMINVS NOB CAES". The aureus served as the primary gold denomination of the Roman Empire from the first century BC until the early fourth century AD. The reverse depicts Jupiter holding a thunderbolt and sceptre with an eagle at his feet, paired with the legend "IOVI CON-S CAES" or "IOVI CO-N-S CAES".
