Historical context
Maxentius ruled as a Roman emperor from 306 until his death in 312, governing Italy and North Africa with the recognition of the Senate in Rome. Although he held authority in these territories, he was not recognised as a legitimate emperor by his fellow imperial rulers. The later years of his reign were consumed by civil war, which culminated in his defeat by Constantine at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge.
The obverse features a laureate head accompanied by the inscription CONSTANTINVS NOB CAES. The reverse depicts Constantine I galloping on horseback, spearing a kneeling foe and riding over a prostrate enemy, framed by the legend VIRTVS CO-NSTANTINI CAES or VIRTVS CON-STANTINI CAES.
