Historical context

Marcus Aurelius Valerius Maxentius served as Roman emperor from 306 until his death on 28 October 312. Despite ruling in North Africa and Italy—where he was recognized by the Senate in Rome and resided permanently—he was not accepted as legitimate by his fellow emperors. Maxentius carried out major building works in the capital before perishing at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge in 312 against Constantine. This coin was struck under his authority at Aquileia, a major Roman city in northeastern Italy founded as a military colony in 181 BC.
