Historical context

Constantine I, also known as Constantine the Great, ruled as Roman emperor from AD 306 to 337. Proclaimed augustus by his army at Eboracum in 306 after the death of his father, Flavius Constantius, he went on to defeat rival emperors Maxentius and Licinius in the civil wars of the Tetrarchy to become sole ruler by 324. This coin was issued under his authority at the mint of Aquileia, a prominent Roman city situated in northeastern Italy.
