Historical context

Constantine I ruled the Roman Empire from AD 306 to 337, having been proclaimed augustus by his army at Eboracum in 306 following the death of his father, Flavius Constantius. After campaigning in the west and east, he took part in the civil wars of the Tetrarchy, defeating rivals including Maxentius and Licinius to become sole ruler of the empire by 324.

This bronze AE3 denomination was produced under Constantine's authority at the mint of Aquileia. The obverse depicts the emperor with the imperial title "CONSTANTINVS P F AVG", while the reverse invokes the deity Sol with variations of the legend "SOLI INVICTO COMITI". Sol is shown holding a globe and raising his right hand beside a seated captive, reflecting imperial coin imagery during Constantine's reign before his full establishment of sole rule.
