Historical context

Maximian served as Roman emperor alongside Diocletian, holding the rank of Caesar from 285 to 286 and Augustus from 286 until his abdication in 305. Tasked with the defence and governance of the western territories, he spent extended periods campaigning along the Rhine and against usurpers before retiring to Italy in 305. This coinage belongs to his administrative network and was struck at Aquileia, a major Roman centre and former military colony situated at the head of the Adriatic in northeastern Italy.
