Historical context

Maximian served as Roman emperor alongside Diocletian, his co-emperor and superior. Maximian was appointed Caesar in 285 and Augustus in 286, ruling until his abdication on 1 May 305. After campaigning along the Rhine, against Carausius, and in Hispania and Mauretania, Maximian concluded his active campaigns in 298 and departed for Italy, where he resided until his abdication.

Struck at the mint of Aquileia under the imperial authority of Maximian, this bronze AE1 coin honours Diocletian. The obverse depicts the laureate head of Diocletian accompanied by the inscription IMP DIOCLETIANVS P F AVG. The reverse design features the Genius of the Roman people, shown nude and wearing a modius with a chlamys draped over the right shoulder, holding a patera over a tripod altar and a cornucopiae, encircled by the legend GENIO POPV-LI ROMANI.
