Historical context

Maximian served as Roman emperor from 286 to 305, having been appointed Augustus of the Western Empire by his co-emperor Diocletian, who ruled in the east. Under the Tetrarchic system established by Diocletian, power was shared between two Augusti and two Caesars. Maximian abdicated alongside Diocletian on 1 May 305. This coinage was produced under Maximian's authority at Aquileia, a major Roman city in northeastern Italy originally founded as a military colony in 181 BC.
