Historical context

Maximian served as Roman emperor from 286 to 305, sharing the title of Augustus with Diocletian. After holding the rank of Caesar from 285, he campaigned along the Rhine frontier, in Gaul, and in Mauretania before retiring to Italy in 298. He abdicated alongside Diocletian on 1 May 305, though he later reclaimed the title of Augustus in late 306 during his son Maxentius' rebellion.

This bronze AE1 was struck under Maximian's authority at the Aquileia mint. The obverse bears the emperor's portrait with the inscription IMP MAXIMIANVS P F AVG.
