Historical context

Constantius I, also known as Constantius Chlorus, was a founding member of the Tetrarchy created by Diocletian, serving as caesar from 293 until becoming senior emperor in May 305. He ruled as augustus until his sudden death at Eboracum in July 306. This aureus, the standard Roman gold denomination before being replaced by the solidus in the early 4th century, was struck under his authority at the ancient city of Aquileia in northeastern Italy.
