Aureus in gold struck at Aquileia under Constantius Chlorus, AD 305–AD 306, catalogued as RIC VI Aquileia 44. Obverse: Head of Severus II, laureate, right. Reverse: Felicitas, draped, seated left, holding caduceus in right hand and cornucopiae in left hand.

Historical context

This aureus was struck between AD 305 and AD 306 at Aquileia under Constantius Chlorus, also known as Constantius I. Constantius served as an original member of the Tetrarchy, reigning as caesar from 293 before becoming augustus from 305 until his death in July 306. The obverse depicts Severus II, another tetrarchic figure, who held the title of caesar before ruling as emperor from 306 until he was killed in September 307. Aquileia, situated at the head of the Adriatic, was a major Roman centre and military colony founded in 181 BC.
