Historical context

This gold coin was struck under the authority of Constantius Chlorus at the mint of Aquileia. Constantius was one of the four original members of the Tetrarchy created by Diocletian, serving first as caesar from 293 to 305 and subsequently ruling as augustus until his death on 25 July 306.

Struck as an aureus, the primary gold coin of ancient Rome from the first century BC until the early fourth century AD, the issue portrays Maximinus Daia with the obverse inscription "MAXIMINVS NOB CAES". The reverse depicts the deity Jupiter holding a thunderbolt and sceptre, accompanied by the legend "IOVI CONSERVATO-RI CAESS NN" or "IOVI CONSERVAT-ORI CAESS NN".
