Historical context

Diocletian served as Roman emperor from 284 until his abdication in 305, having established the Tetrarchy to divide rule across the empire alongside his imperial colleagues. Constantius Chlorus served as caesar from 293 until succeeding as augustus in May 305, before dying in July 306. This coin was minted under Constantius Chlorus at Aquileia, a major Roman city and military colony founded in 181 BC in northeastern Italy, honouring the retired senior emperor Diocletian.
