Historical context

Constantius Chlorus served as one of the original members of the Tetrarchy created by Diocletian, holding the rank of caesar from 293 to 305 before ruling as augustus until his death in July 306. His authority over imperial coinage spanned this administrative framework, during which regional mints produced bronze issues for the members of the imperial college.

Produced at Aquileia, this bronze AE1 coin was struck under the authority of Constantius Chlorus. It depicts Maximinus Daia with the obverse inscription "MAXIMINVS NOB CAES". The reverse portrays the god Mars helmeted and advancing right, carrying a transverse spear and a trophy over his shoulder, accompanied by the legend reading "VIRTVS AV-GG ET CAESS NN", "VIRTVS A-V-G-G ET CAESS NN", or "VIRTVS AVGG - ET CAESS NN".
