Historical context

Diocletian became Roman emperor in 284 and stabilized the state after the Crisis of the Third Century, initiating the Tetrarchy to share imperial governance. In 286, he appointed Maximian as co-emperor with the rank of Augustus to rule the Western Roman Empire. After campaigns concluded in Mauretania and Hispania, Maximian governed western territories, including Roman Carthage, a former Phoenician capital that had been refounded after its destruction in 146 BC. Struck at Carthage between AD 296 and AD 298, this silver coin honours Diocletian during their joint reign.
