Historical context

Maximian served as Roman emperor from 286 to 305 alongside his co-emperor Diocletian, spending much of his reign on military campaigns. After the usurper of Britain was ousted in 296, Maximian travelled south to counter piracy near Hispania and Berber incursions in Mauretania, campaigning until 298. This silver coinage was struck between AD 296 and AD 298 at Carthage, the major city of the Roman province of Africa.
