Historical context

Maximian served as Roman emperor from 286 to 305 alongside his co-emperor Diocletian, sharing the title of Augustus. After suppressing internal rebellions and securing frontiers along the Rhine, Maximian moved south in 296 to combat piracy near Hispania and repel Berber incursions in Mauretania.

Struck at the Carthage mint under Maximian's authority, this silver issue bears the obverse portrait and title of his senior co-emperor, reading "DIOCLETIANVS AVG". The reverse design depicts Africa wearing an elephant-skin head-dress, holding a standard and a tusk alongside a lion with a captured bull.
