Historical context

Maximian served as Roman emperor from 286 to 305, having first been appointed Caesar in 285. He shared the rank of Augustus with his co-emperor and superior, Diocletian. Maximian spent much of his reign engaged in military campaigns across the Western Empire, including operations against Germanic tribes, piracy near Hispania, and Berber incursions in Mauretania, before abdicating alongside Diocletian on 1 May 305.

This silver piece of uncertain value was struck under the authority of Maximian at the Carthage mint. Although issued under Maximian, the obverse portrays the laureate head of his senior imperial partner, Diocletian, accompanied by the inscription DIOCLETIANVS AVG. The reverse design features the mark XC / VI positioned entirely within a wreath.
