Historical context

Diocletian served as Roman emperor from 284 until his abdication in 305, having ended the Crisis of the Third Century. In 286, he appointed his fellow officer Maximian as co-emperor with the rank of Augustus to oversee the Western Empire, while Diocletian governed the east as senior Augustus. Maximian exercised authority in western territories, campaigning across Gaul, along the Rhine frontier, and into Mauretania, before both emperors abdicated together on 1 May 305. This coinage was produced under Maximian at the mint of Carthage, a major city of the Romans' Africa province.
