Historical context

Maximian served as Roman emperor alongside Diocletian from 286 to 305, before abdicating on 1 May 305. Under the Tetrarchic system instituted during this period, Gaius Galerius Valerius Maximianus served as caesar under Diocletian before being elevated to augustus in 305. This coin was minted at Carthage, an ancient city in northern Africa that had been re-developed into the major urban centre of the Romans' Africa province after its destruction in 146 BC.
