Historical context
Maximian served as Roman emperor alongside Diocletian, acting as Caesar from 285 to 286 and Augustus from 286 to 305. Establishing his residence at Trier, he campaigned extensively across Gaul, the Rhine frontier, and later against Berber incursions in Mauretania between 296 and 298. He abdicated the imperial office on 1 May 305 at Diocletian's behest, retiring until becoming involved in later imperial conflicts.
Produced under Maximian's authority at the mint of Carthage, this bronze AE1 piece features a portrait of Galerius on the obverse accompanied by the legend "MAXIMIANVS NOB CAES". The reverse portrays Carthage standing in a long robe and holding fruits in both hands, paired with the legend "SALVIS AVGG ET CAESS FEL KART". Related types sharing this reverse design were consolidated across issues produced at Carthage and other mints.
