Historical context

Maximian ruled as Roman emperor from 286 to 305, serving initially as Caesar from 285 before sharing the rank of Augustus with Diocletian. Operating across the western empire, he conducted campaigns along the Rhine frontier and later moved south to counter Berber incursions in Mauretania, an operation concluded in 298. Maximian eventually abdicated his office alongside Diocletian on 1 May 305.

This bronze fractional piece was produced at the Carthage mint under Maximian's authority. While Maximian served as the issuing authority, the obverse portrays Galerius with the legend "GAL VAL MAXIMIANVS NOB CAES", recognising him in the imperial college as Caesar. The reverse features "VOT X / FK" framed within an enclosing wreath.
