Historical context

Maximian served as Roman emperor from 286 to 305, having previously held the rank of Caesar from 285 to 286. He shared the title of Augustus with his co-emperor Diocletian, who was his superior. Maximian campaigned extensively along the Rhine, in Britain, and later against Berber incursions in Mauretania, before retiring at Diocletian's behest in 305.

Struck at the mint of Carthage under Maximian's authority, this bronze fraction features Diocletian rather than Maximian himself. The obverse depicts a radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Diocletian accompanied by the legend "IMP C DIOCLETIANVS P F AVG". The reverse design displays an inscription rendered as "vOT XX / FK" or "VOT X•X / FK", enclosed within a wreath.
