AE1 in bronze struck at Carthage under Constantius Chlorus, AD 306, catalogued as RIC VI Carthage 41a. Obverse: Bust of Diocletian, laureate, wearing imperial mantle, right, holding olive branch in right hand and mappa in left hand.

Reverse: Providentia, draped, standing right, extending right hand to Quies; Quies, draped, standing left, holding branch in right hand and leaning on sceptre with left hand. Obverse legend: D N DIOCLETIANO BAEATISSIMO SEN AVG. Reverse legend: PROVIDENTIA DEORVM QVIES AVGG.

Historical context

Diocletian established the Tetrarchy in 293, naming Constantius Chlorus as a junior caesar alongside Maximian and Galerius. Following Diocletian's abdication in 305, Constantius was elevated to senior emperor as augustus, reigning until his death at Eboracum in July 306. Diocletian's voluntary retirement marked an unprecedented transition in imperial rule, having stabilised the Roman realm following the Crisis of the Third Century.
