Historical context

Flavius Valerius Severus, also known as Severus II, served as Roman emperor from 306 to 307 within the Tetrarchy. He shared governance of the western portion of the empire with Constantine I, who was proclaimed emperor by his army at Eboracum in 306 following the death of his father, Flavius Constantius. This bronze coinage was produced in 306 at Carthage, a former Phoenician colony in northern Africa that had developed into the major city of the Roman Africa province.
