Historical context

Maxentius became Roman emperor in 306, holding power in Italy and North Africa despite lacking recognition from his rival emperors. Struck between AD 306 and AD 307 at the major Roman city of Carthage, this gold aureus dates from the early years of his rule before civil war engulfed the region. Aurei served as the primary gold denomination of Rome from the 1st century BC until the introduction of the solidus in the early 4th century AD.
