Historical context

This gold aureus was issued at the ancient North African city of Carthage under Lucius Domitius Alexander, who served as vicarius of Africa before usurping the title of Roman emperor from 308 to 310 during the Tetrarchy. Alexander was proclaimed emperor by his troops after refusing a demand from Maxentius to send his son to Rome. Maxentius ultimately suppressed the insurrection by dispatching forces to Africa, where Alexander was taken prisoner and executed by strangulation around 310.
