Historical context

Lucius Domitius Alexander, the vicarius of Africa, was proclaimed emperor by his troops in 308 after refusing orders from Maxentius to send his son to Rome. His rebellion controlled Sardinia and Roman territories in northern Africa, disrupting the Tetrarchy until Maxentius sent forces under Rufius Volusianus and Zenas to crush the uprising, leading to Alexander's capture and execution around 310. This bronze piece was struck at Carthage, the major Roman city in northern Africa that had been re-developed after its destruction in 146 BC.
