Historical context

Lucius Domitius Alexander was the vicar of Africa before being proclaimed Roman emperor by his troops in 308, ruling during the Tetrarchy until his death around 310. His rebellion arose after he refused an order from Maxentius to send his son to Rome, leading Alexander to take control of provinces in North Africa as well as Sardinia. Struck at Carthage, an ancient city that had become the major centre of the Roman province of Africa, this bronze coin was issued under Alexander's authority prior to his defeat and execution by Maxentius's forces.
