Historical context
Domitius Alexander was a Roman emperor from 308 to 310 during the Tetrarchy. Formerly the vicarius of Africa, he was proclaimed emperor by his army after refusing orders from Maxentius to send his son to Rome. Alexander governed provinces in North Africa and Sardinia until Maxentius dispatched Rufius Volusianus and Zenas to quell the insurrection, leading to Alexander's capture and execution by strangulation.
Struck at the Carthage mint, this bronze AE2 was produced under Alexander's authority during his brief rule in North Africa. The obverse depicts the emperor with the legend "IMP C ALEXANDER P F AVG", while the reverse features a winged Victory carrying a wreath and palm branch alongside the legend "VICTORIA ALEXAND-RI AVG N".
