Historical context

Diocletian served as Roman emperor from 284 until 305, stabilising the Roman world and ending the Crisis of the Third Century. In 286, he initiated a division of imperial governance by appointing his fellow officer Maximian as Augustus to rule the Western Empire, while Diocletian governed the East as senior Augustus. This fractional coinage was produced at Cyzicus, an ancient Greek town in Mysia in Anatolia, bearing the portrait of Maximian receiving Victory from Jupiter.
