Historical context
Struck between AD 305 and AD 306, this bronze coin was produced at Cyzicus, an ancient city situated in Mysia in Anatolia. The issue dates to the Tetrarchy under Emperor Galerius, who had been promoted to augustus in 305 following the abdication of Diocletian. The obverse portrays Severus II (Flavius Valerius Severus) as caesar, prior to his brief reign as Roman emperor in the western half of the empire from 306 to 307.
