Historical context

Galerius participated in the Tetrarchic system of government under Diocletian before being promoted to augustus upon Diocletian's abdication in 305. He ruled as Roman emperor from 305 to 311, serving alongside his fellow tetrarch Constantius Chlorus. Constantius, who served as caesar from 293 and then as augustus until his sudden death at Eboracum in July 306, was depicted on imperial coinage of this era. This bronze piece was struck between 305 and 306 at Cyzicus, an ancient town situated in Mysia on the shoreward side of the Kapıdağ Peninsula.
