Historical context

Diocletian served as Roman emperor from 284 until his abdication in 305, having established the Tetrarchic system of government alongside Maximian, Galerius, and Constantius. Following Diocletian's abdication in 305, Galerius was elevated to the rank of augustus and governed until 311. This imperial bronze coin was struck between AD 305 and AD 306 at Cyzicus, an ancient city situated in Mysia in Anatolia, commemorating the retired senior emperor Diocletian.
