Historical context

Galerius participated in the Roman imperial system of government known as the Tetrarchy, initially serving as caesar under the emperor Diocletian. Following the abdication of Diocletian in 305, Galerius was promoted to augustus, ruling the Roman Empire from 305 until May 311 amidst challenges from multiple usurpers as the Tetrarchic arrangement broke down.

Struck at the mint of Cyzicus under the authority of Galerius, this bronze AE1 piece depicts the retired senior emperor Diocletian. The obverse presents Diocletian accompanied by the legend "D N DIOCLETIANO FELICISSIMO SEN AVG". On the reverse, the design illustrates Providentia extending her right hand to Quies, accompanied by the inscription "PROVIDENTIA DEORVM QVIES AVGG", reflecting the divine foresight and rest associated with the imperial transition.
