Historical context

Galerius, originally serving as caesar under Emperor Diocletian within the Tetrarchy, became Roman emperor as augustus from 305 until his death in May 311. His rule saw the breakdown of the Tetrarchic system and conflicts with multiple usurpers. This issue was struck under his authority at Cyzicus, an ancient Greek town situated in Mysia in Anatolia, on the shoreward side of the Kapıdağ Peninsula.
