Historical context

This bronze coinage was produced under the authority of Galerius, who served as Roman emperor from 305 to 311. Having previously functioned as caesar under Diocletian within the imperial system of the Tetrarchy, Galerius was elevated to augustus in 305. His reign as augustus involved contending with the breakdown of the Tetrarchic arrangement until his death in May 311.

Struck at the mint of Cyzicus as an AE2 denomination, this issue features Galeria Valeria, named on the obverse as "GAL VAL-ERIA AVG". The reverse depicts Venus standing front and holding an apple while raising drapery over her shoulder, accompanied by the inscription "VENERI V-ICTRICI". Similar reverse designs and legends were also minted at other imperial centres, including Heraclea.
