Historical context
Maximinus Daza was admitted to the Tetrarchy as caesar in 305 by his uncle Galerius, later claiming the title of augustus in 310 and reigning as Roman emperor until 313. A committed pagan who carried out persecutions of Christians, he shared and frequently contested imperial power with Licinius until being defeated at the Battle of Tzirallum in 313. This bronze coin was struck under his authority in AD 311 at Cyzicus, an ancient town located in Mysia in Anatolia.
