Historical context

Diocletian, born Diocles in Dalmatia, was a Roman cavalry commander proclaimed emperor by his troops following the deaths of Carus and Numerian. After defeating Carinus at the Battle of the Margus, he reigned from 284 until his abdication in 305. Nicknamed Jovius, he brought stability after the Crisis of the Third Century, eventually dividing governance under the Tetrarchy and presiding over the Eastern Roman Empire as senior Augustus.

Struck at the Heraclea mint, this bronze AE3 coin presents Diocletian on the obverse accompanied by the legend "IMP C C VAL DIOCLETIANVS P F AVG". The reverse depicts the emperor receiving a small Victory on a globe from Jupiter, who stands leaning upon a sceptre, beneath the legend "CONCORDIA MIL-ITVM". The design brings together the ruler and Jupiter, reflecting the religious imagery aligned with Diocletian's regime.
