Historical context

This bronze piece was struck at the Heraclea mint under the authority of Galerius, who ruled as Roman emperor from 305 to 311. Galerius participated in the Tetrarchic system of government, having first served as caesar under Emperor Diocletian before being elevated to augustus in 305 upon Diocletian's abdication. His reign as augustus involved managing the breakdown of the Tetrarchic arrangement while contending with multiple usurpers.

Issued in the denomination of an AE2, this coinage links the authority of Galerius with Maximinus Daia, who is depicted on the obverse as a laureate head facing right with the accompanying legend "GAL VAL MAXIMINVS NOB CAES". The reverse portrays Virtus advancing to the right, carrying a transverse spear in the right hand and bearing a trophy over the left shoulder, framed by the inscription "VIRTVTI - E-XERCITI".
