AE1 in bronze struck at Londinium under Constantine I, AD 307, catalogued as RIC VI Londinium 100. Obverse: Bust of Maximian, laureate, cuirassed, right. Reverse: Roma, helmeted, draped, seated front, head left, in hexastyle temple with plain pediment, holding small Victory in right hand and leaning on sceptre with left hand.

Historical context

Constantine I was proclaimed Augustus by his army at Eboracum in AD 306, beginning a reign that lasted until 337. In late 306, Maximian resumed the title of Augustus to aid his son Maxentius, but in April 307 he fled to Constantine's court in Trier after an unsuccessful attempt to depose him. This bronze coin was struck in AD 307 under Constantine at Londinium, the Roman settlement that served as the commercial centre and capital of Roman Britain.
