Historical context

Constantine I was Roman emperor from AD 306 to 337, having been proclaimed augustus by his army at Eboracum in Britannia following the death of his father in 306. His reign encompassed the civil wars of the Tetrarchy, in which he contended with rival emperors, including Maxentius and Licinius, before eventually emerging victorious to become the sole ruler of the Roman Empire by 324.

Struck at the mint of Londinium under the authority of Constantine I, this bronze AE1 piece features an obverse dedicated to his contemporary Licinius, bearing the legend IMP LICINIVS P F AVG. The reverse depicts Sol standing with a chlamys, holding up a globe and a whip, accompanied by the inscription COMITI - AAVVGG.
